West Indian Manatee - (Trichechus manatus)
The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is a symbol of gentleness and grace a massive yet unhurried herbivore drifting quietly through rivers, estuaries, and coastal shallows. With their rounded forms and steady movements, manatees embody the calm rhythm of wild waters.
They survive on seagrass, consuming hundreds of pounds each day, and in doing so, help shape and sustain the ecosystems they inhabit. But this vital food source is disappearing: pollution and clouded waters are preventing seagrass from growing, leaving manatees struggling to find enough to eat. Once mistaken for mermaids by sailors, the manatee today stands as both a wonder and a call to action, a living testament to what must not be lost.
