Burrowing Owl - (Athene cunicularia)
Ground-dwelling and sharp-eyed, the Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a striking departure from its nocturnal relatives. Perched upright on long legs, it surveys the open landscape with keen vigilance a sentinel of the prairie, desert, and grassland.
Unlike most owls, it is often active in broad daylight, foraging with agility for insects, reptiles, and small mammals. True to its name, it makes its home underground, repurposing the burrows of prairie dogs or tortoises. In a display of surprising ingenuity, it decorates these tunnels with animal dung a disguise that masks scent from predators and lures beetles straight to the doorstep.
