Burrowing Owl - (Athene cunicularia)

Ground-dwelling and sharp-eyed, the Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a striking departure from its nocturnal relatives. Perched upright on long legs, it surveys the open landscape with keen vigilance a sentinel of the prairie, desert, and grassland.

Unlike most owls, it is often active in broad daylight, foraging with agility for insects, reptiles, and small mammals.
